Hoy no Circula Program Begins in Mexico City

Starting at 05:00, Mexico City's Hoy no Circula program aims to reduce vehicle emissions. Restrictions apply to vehicles with pink stickers ending in 7 and 8. This initiative affects multiple municipalities in the State of Mexico as well.


Hoy no Circula Program Begins in Mexico City

Starting at 05:00 hours, in Mexico City and 18 municipalities of the State of Mexico, the "Hoy no Circula" program comes into effect with the aim of reducing emissions of pollutants produced by vehicles.

For today, the restriction applies to vehicles with pink stickers whose plates end with the numbers 7 and 8, and it ends at 22:00 hours. In Mexico City, the program applies across all boroughs, while in the State of Mexico it includes municipalities such as Atizapán, Coacalco, Cuautitlán, among others.

People who violate this rule in the capital may face fines and have their vehicles towed. The towing fine ranges from 919 to 1,833 pesos, and additionally, a sanction of 2,262 pesos is added, with the possibility of increase as stipulated in the Traffic Regulation.

Regarding restrictions for other vehicles, those with hologram 1 whose plates end in 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 cannot circulate on the first and third Saturday of each month. Meanwhile, holograms 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 have restrictions on the second and fourth Saturday, and vehicles with hologram 2 or foreign plates cannot circulate every Saturday from 05:00 to 22:00 hours. Foreign vehicles also have additional restrictions during the week and at specific hours.

On the other hand, there are exceptions to the "Hoy no Circula" program which include agricultural trailers, electric vehicles, emergency vehicles, school buses, funeral service vehicles, among others. The complete list of exceptions is defined by the applicable laws and regulations in the matter.
